It’s hard to talk about Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey without mentioning Woodford Reserve. Woodford Reserve is a well-known and respected brand. One of their most popular offerings is the Double Oaked expression, which is aged in two different barrels to give it a unique flavor profile. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at Woodford Reserve Double Oaked and see what makes it stand out from other bourbons on the market.

About Woodford Reserve

Before we dive into the specifics of Double Oaked, let’s take a quick look at the brand itself. Woodford Reserve is distilled and bottled at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. The distillery is located on the historic site of the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery, which dates back to the early 1800s. Woodford Reserve was first introduced in 1996 and has since become a staple in the bourbon world.

The color of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is a deep amber, with shades of gold and brown. When you hold the glass up to the light, you can see the richness of the whiskey’s hue. It’s a beautiful sight to behold, and a clear indication of the care that’s gone into the aging process.

When you first take a whiff of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, you’re hit with a wave of warm and inviting aromas. The scent is reminiscent of freshly baked apple pie, with notes of hot vanilla sauce, barrel-aged maple syrup, and wet tobacco leaves. While it might seem like a lot of flavors to pack into one nose, the aromas remain cohesive and inviting throughout. Adding water to the whiskey dampens some of the sweetness but reveals a hint of brown sugar.

The sweetness that’s present on the nose is less pronounced on the palate. There are notes of brown sugar, but they’re subtle. The dominant flavors are extra dark chocolate, cinnamon, and oak, which make for a delicious and complex taste. There’s also a touch of mint that appears on the back of the tongue, bringing back memories of After Eight chocolate mints. The whiskey could benefit from a higher alcohol content to give it more intensity, but it’s still enjoyable as is. Adding water brings out more cinnamon and apple notes, but removes the dark chocolate flavor.

The finish of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is medium-long and dominated by the taste of chocolate mint, with a hint of licorice and toffee in the background. The flavor stays with you for a while, making for a satisfying end to each sip. Adding water intensifies the finish, but the flavors remain the same.

Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is on the medium to the higher end of the price scale when it comes to bourbon, but it’s worth the investment for anyone looking for a unique and delicious whiskey experience. The uniqueness of something being aged in multiple new barrels is worth the price and story to tell as you share sips with friends and family.

What Makes Woodford Reserve Double-Oaked Unique?

The double barrel aging process is what sets Woodford Reserve Double Oaked apart from other bourbons. The whiskey is first aged in new, charred oak barrels, then transferred to a second barrel that has been heavily toasted and lightly charred. This second barrel adds extra depth and complexity to the flavor profile, resulting in a one-of-a-kind whiskey that’s sure to impress even the most discerning palate.

Similar Whiskey To Try

Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select

This should be obvious right? You have to try Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select while also trying the Double Oaked to see what change takes place throughout the double aging process. To me, it’s pretty wild to taste the differences that occur because of the new barrel. It’s even cooler if you can try them side by side. You will likely agree with me that the Double Oaked adds a flavor profile that is more enjoyable than Distiller’s Select but it’s still worth comparing the two.

Old Forester 1910

Another great whiskey to try if you want more exposure to the double-barreling process is Old Forester 1910. Old Forester 1910 is part of the Old Forester Whiskey Row series and is known for its “double barreling” process, which involves finishing the bourbon in a second, heavily charred oak barrel. This imparts a rich and deep flavor profile with notes of dark fruit, vanilla, and spice. It’s really hard for me to pick a favorite between these two although I might lean towards Old Forester if I was forced to choose.

Conclusion & Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is a unique and enjoyable bourbon whiskey that has been skillfully crafted by Woodford Reserve. From its rich color to its complex nose and flavors, this whiskey stands out from others in its class. The scent of freshly baked apple pie, hot vanilla sauce, Amarena cherries, barrel-aged maple syrup, and wet tobacco leaves on the nose instantly invites you to explore the flavors on the palate. The palate itself offers notes of extra dark chocolate, cinnamon, and oak, with a little bit of mint that lingers in the finish.

Overall, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is an excellent choice for those looking for a unique and enjoyable bourbon whiskey that delivers a satisfying drinking experience. Whether you’re a seasoned whiskey drinker or a newcomer to the world of bourbon, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is definitely worth a try. It may be a little on the expensive side, but the quality and craftsmanship of this whiskey make it worth the investment.
